Capacity building to enhance knowledge sharing on poverty reduction strategies and the millennium development goals in Africa: training workshop report

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) established, at the urging of member States and the Bretton Woods institutions, the African Learning Group on Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (the PRSP Learning Group or PRSP-LG) as a regional forum for peer learning and information sharing on the design and implementation of national Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRSs). One of the key messages that came out of these meetings was that the convening of the LG on an annual basis was not sufficient to ensure that African policy makers stayed abreast of the rapidly evolving poverty reduction policy environment. The project broadly aimed to strengthen African policymaking capacity for economic policy formulation and management. It planned to do so by: creating mechanisms for enhanced sharing of existing knowledge; encouraging the generation of new knowledge that will significantly boost national efforts at tackling poverty in African countries; and providing research and training support. One of the major achievements of the project was a Knowledge Audit that was undertaken in 15 African countries. The objective of this training programme was to provide participants with the tools and skills for effective use of the web-based electronic platform developed by ECA to enhance knowledge and experience sharing across African countries. Content featured best practices, experiences, challenges and lessons learnt on PRSs and MDG planning and implementation.
