Statement by K.Y. Amoako, United Nation Under-Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of Economic Commission for Africa

This Statement delivered by K.Y. Amoako United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa at the Seminar on the Establishment, within the OAU, of an Early Warning System on Conflict Situations in Africa. Mr. Amoako, on his remarks highlighted that, The establishment of the OAU Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution and the subsequent functioning of its Central Organ are historic achievements and crucial steps in enabling African countries to deal collectively with the continents security problem and conflicts. The UN and the OAU have been natural allies and close partners in the quest for conflict prevention and the establishment of peace and security in Africa. The "Special Initiative is intended to reinforce and give further practical expression to these endeavors. Its aim is to identify and develop practical theme-oriented actions to maximize the support provided by the UN System to African development, and to raise the priority given to Africa in the international agenda. ECA will continue to work closely with the OAU. Within the context of the issues before this seminar, ECA's Pan African Development Information System (PADIS) has a lot to offer in data gathering and interactive linkages for the OAU'S Early Warning System.
