The challenge of education in the socio-economic development of the African region

There was evidence that Africa faced an education gap in comparison with other developing regions of Asia and Latin America. This education gap prohibited optimal utilization of available resources and hampered socioeconomic development. During the sixties, therefore, human resources development came to the foreground in the discussions about -the problem of development and centered mainly on the "formal" educational component. During the same period, two documents had a great impact on the development of education in Africa viz the conference of African States on the development of education in Africa.
