Mortality and causes of death in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is located in what is known as the "Horn of Africa" in the northeastern part of the continent. With a vast area of over 1.2 million square kilometers its southern tip lies some 400 kilometers north of the equator. In Ethiopia demographic data are scanty and mortality data are even poorer. The two multi-purpose national sample surveys that were conducted in the country are basically the main sources of data. This paper is an attempt at discussing mortality and causes of death in Ethiopia and draw upon the available demographic data and medical reports. The use of morbidity data to assess cause of death will also be considered.
