A proposal for the setting up of a UN gender cluster to support the implementation of NEPAD: concept note for the first ad-hoc UNgroup meeting
The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), which was launched in 2001, is an Africa-owned and led process that reflects African leaders' common vision and shared commitment to eradicating poverty and to placing their countries, both individually and collectively, on the path to sustainable growth and development. This goal is fully in accordance with international commitments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and in particular the goal of halving extreme poverty by 2015. The notion of partnership embedded in NEPAD is one of the strengths of the initiative and has several components encompassing partnership between African Governments and their development partners, and between the Governments and their peoples, including the private sector and civil society. Thus, NEPAD reflects the growing consensus that the development process is a multi-stakeholder effort.
