Guideline for the training of Dockers and supervisors in the African ports : United Nations transport and communications decade in Africa 1979-1988(UNTACDA)

Within the framework of the United Nations Transport and Communications Decade for Africa 1987-1988, one of ECA’s priority was to consider port training projects submitted by African governments and include them in phase I and II of the Decade programme. In phase I that extended from 1980 to 1983 there were thirteen projects directly concerned with port training namely, Establishment of expert consultant services in three African sub regions and giving training assistances to countries lacking staff with adequate knowledge to carry out day-to-day tasks. In phase II of the Decade programme (1984-1988) there are seven projects directly related to port training at an estimated cost of about US$ 29 million. Most of the African port Authorities, 28 out of 36, have already established or are in the process of establishing national Training Centres for the training of their port personnel especially for lower and middle level staff.
