Mission report on selected aspects on National Accounts of Tanzania

The mission evaluated the current status of national accounts work in Tanzania, including the present staffing and computerization of work in the National Accounts Section of the BOS. It also was aware of the need in the coming year or two for the BOS to re-estimate both the absolute level of total GDP as well as the industrial distribution of that total. Further work on a number of fields, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, amongst others, would be required in order to assess the contribution to GDP from these sectors, taking into account of the various censuses and surveys that have been undertaken and are being analyzed(e.g., the Population Census of 1988; the Census of Industrial Production of 1989; the annual Agricultural Sample Surveys of 1986-1990; the National Household Budget Survey of 1991/92; the Labor Force Survey of 1991; the National Informal Sector Survey of 1991, etc.). The mission assisted in adopting appropriate methodology for establishing constant 1985 prices series of GDP in market prices and its breakdown into expenditure categories for the years 1986-1991; made calculations of correlative price movements for different types of expenditure; calculated volume and unit value indexes of imports and exports and terms of trade; and attempted calculations of trade gain(or loss) and hence gross domestic income in constant 1985 prices, for the years 1986-1991.
