Statement by professor Adebayo Adedeji United Nations Under-Secretary General and executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa

The Speech was delivered on the Tenth Meeting of the Africa Regional Coordinating Committee for the Integration of Women in Development Addis Ababa, from March 23-25, 1989. The paper examined the situation of African Women at the -end of the 80s both the positive and negative development. The report highlighted a wide range of activities being undertaken, by the UN family, By NGOs and by governments, for the advancement of women since the Nairobi and Arusha Conferences was held. On the contrary, women have been adversely affected by the crisis still confronting African economies in all sectors. Still tremendous efforts made by different actors to strengthen the women’s national machineries and women affair units by appointing women in strategic positions.
