Telecommunications and signalling on African railways

An impressive growth in road transport and a correspondingly considerable drop in railway traffic with regard to number of passengers and volume of goods, is the current trend in Africa south of the Sahara. why should one seek an improvement in the African telecommunications and signalling network when in fact such an improvement could only be justified technically and economically by an increase in traffic and revenues?" The t\fo fundamental reasons for this situation are technical handicaps and technological changes. Most African railways and telecommunication networks are technically defective due mainly to saturation and lack of reliability. The equipment has been mostly completely worn out, a situation further compunded by a chronic lack of spare parts due to shortage of foreign exchange or simply to the fact that some very old equipment are no longer in production.
