Popular participation and the challenge of self-reliance in Africa

This paper argues that people's participation in a society that seeks to establish a sell-reliant and democratic society should lie conceptualized within the context of Africa's history and contemporary political economy. While popular participation characterized the development of nationalist coalitions to win political independence, the post-colonial history of African countries has witnessed rapid and systematic demobilization of the people from the political arena.
