Progress report on the implementation of the world food summit plan of action in Africa
It is against the dark background of food insecurity in developing countries that FAO initiated and organized the World Food Summit that took place in November 1996. The objective of the Summit was to bring together world leaders to reflect on and adopt concerted actions to tackle the problem of rampant poverty and hunger that still persist, although with varying degree, in different regions of the world. The Rome Declaration on World Food Security and the World Food Summit Plan of Action laid the foundations for diverse paths to a common objective- Food Security, at individual, household, national, regional, and global levels. The ultimate objective of the Summit is to half the number of hungry people in the world by the year 2015.
