Unrecorded Transborder Trade Between African Countries: a preliminary Note By the Secretariat
It is a fact of history that the existing territorial boundaries between African countries are the result of the ‘’scramble for Africa’’ among the European nations in the 19th century. There boundaries are artificial and reflect the political influence of the colonial power in Africa at that time rather than a natural physical separation based on ethnic considerations among the African peoples. In many instances, boundaries cut across ethnic groups which share the same culture, traditions and social systems. It is therefore not surprising that even today, more than twenty five years after the achievement of independence by most African countries.
