Effects of plant extracts on the fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet in vitro.

Mycosphaerella fijiensis is a fungus that causes the Black Sigatoka disease in bananas. This disease affects the majority banana plantations in the world and is responsible for massive losses of the production. In this investigation, the effects of plant extracts on the germination and growth of Mycosphaerella fijiensis were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Banana leaves with stage six symptoms of Black Sigatoka were collected, cut into pieces of 2 cm² and incubated for 48 hours at room temperature to facilitate the discharge of ascospores. After 48 hours, the leaves were transferred into Petri dishes containing water Agar and plant extracts made using Ethanol 97% and Ethyl Acetate as solvent. The plants used for extraction were: Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) with code name CIT-12, Shameplant (Mimosa pudica) code name CIT-13, Ginger (Zingiber officinale) code name CIT-14, Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) code number CIT-15, Nettles (Urtica dioica) code name CIT-16 and Gavilana (Neurolaena lobata) code name CIT-17. In the first trial a concentration of 500 mg/L for each extract including the absolute control, and 10 mg/L for the commercial control (Propiconazole) was used. A second trial was conducted with the absolute control, the relevant Ethyl Acetate extracts CIT-12, CIT-14, CIT-T-15, and the Ethanol extract CIT-15 at a concentration of 250 mg/L while the commercial control remained at a concentration of 10mg/L. In the first trial, only Ethyl Acetate extracts CIT-12, CIT-14, CIT-15, and Ethanol extract CIT-15, CIT-16, CIT17 showed inhibitory effects on the germination while only ethyl acetate extract CIT12, CIT-14, CIT15 and ethanol extract CIT-15 showed inhibitory effects on the growth of the germ tube when compared with the absolute and commercial control. In the second trial, ethyl acetate extract CIT-14 and CIT-15 showed inhibitory effects on the germination but only ethyl acetate CIT-14 showed relevant inhibitory effects on the growth of germ tube when compared with the absolute and commercial control.
