Ctenocladus circinnatus (Chlorophyta) in stuccos from archaeological sites of southern Spain

Ctenocladus circinnatus Borzi is a filamentous green alga found only in aquatic and saline environments. It seems to be adapted also for growth in aerophytic and moderately saline stuccos, which suggests that it is more widely distributed than previously thought. The climatic conditions of the stucco surface - high light intensity and temperature and low water availability - prevent epilithic algal colonization but induce cryptoendolithic and chasmoendolithic growth, which is facilitated by the porosity of the material. In laboratory cultures there is a definite effect of pH on germination and growth of C. circinnatus, because in neutral or slightly acid pH there is no or very little germination, whereas optimum growth was observed at pH 9. Ultrastructural studies, necessary for identification of this species, confirm the presence of special features such as the presence of intercellular pit-like connections and reveal additional features not previously reported.
