Acute toxicity of cationic softeners determined in vitro on RTG-2 trout cells

The in vitro acute cytotoxicity of five industrial cationic softeners was determined on fish cells using the RTG-2 cytotoxicity test. EC50 values for three different endpoints (ATP, viability and cell detachment) showed no significant statistical differences between viability and ATP content. In contrast, EC50 values for cell detachment were only obtained for two of the compounds examined. Comparison of in vitro EC50 values and reported LC50 values indicated that this in vitro test could be employed as an alternative test for assessing the relative toxicities of cationic softeners.
