Lutein and zeaxanthin status. Dietary intake, serum concentrations and macular pigment density in Spanish subjects

Background and objectives: Lutein and zeaxanthin are dietary carotenoids. Both are concentrated in retina and constitute the macular pigment. A higher concentration of lutein and zeaxanthin in blood or intake has been associated with lower risk of age related macular diseases. Objective: to asses the status of lutein and zeaxanthin by means of dietary intake, blood levels and macular pigment density (MPD) and correlations among them.
