Evaluation of cation exchange capacity measurements for variable charge soils

The CEC of various Spanish soils derived from volcanic ashes was determined by using different procedures: (1) displacement with 1N NaOAc, pH 8.2 (2) effective CEC determined as the total exchangeable bases displaced with NH40Ac plus exchangeable A1 extracted with 1N KCl and (3) compulsive exchange of Mg for Ba. The order of magnitude of the CEC values obtained was NaOAc» effective CEC > compulsive exchange. The effect which the method used has on determining the quantitative value of the CEC was established clearly. What is more, the results have shown that the effect in ques tion is more noticeable when the variable charge characteristics of the soils increase as a result of their mineralogical composition and their organic matter content.
