El paisaje de los repositorios institucionales open access en España

[EN] The open access movement has made significant progress in recent years, despite still being relatively new to Spain. Twenty-one Spanish institutions, including sixteen universities, have signed the Declaration. In terms of Spain’s presence in international directories, the current figures for the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) and the Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) are 32 and 33 repositories respectively. However, some recently-created repositories or those that are in trial stages are not included in these figures. The difference between the figures is due to different inclusion criteria and to some errors detected in the ROAR directory. The first repository in Spain was Doctoral Theses in the Internet (TDR), which was set up in 2001. Most Spanish repositories began to emerge in 2005. Data about these repositories show that the most popular software is Dspace and Eprints. One common characteristic of Spanish repositories is the diversity of their contents. Most of the documents in the repositories are theses, dissertations and conference papers, followed by journal articles. The growth of repositories over time follows one of three models: linear growth; staged growth; and flat growth. The first model, as its name indicates, represents constant linear growth over time. This kind of growth is clearly seen in the TDX repository or the Treballs Acadèmics UPC (UPC Academic Works) repository. The other two models reflect “uploads” of different sizes over different periods of time. Thus, growth can either be staged (when there are more frequent uploads), e.g. in RACO or of Eprints Complutense, or flat (if the time between deposits is longer) e.g. the Carlos III University Repository or RECERCAT.
