Cost reduction though mechanisation.

Mechanisation plays an important role in oil palm plantations by reducing cost through reduced dependence on labour and consequently improves efficiency. Furthermore it was proven that mechanisation increased productivity and product quality of workers. In order to achieve that, consideration must be given to the environment in which the machine is to work, technology of the machine and commitment by the entire operating team. The following guidelines have to be fulfilled before embarking on a mechanisation project, which includes, project justification, economic evaluation, afea identification and suitability of machine for the area. Besides that, organisation of workers, work method, wage structure and payment system are other important elements that should not be left out. To ensure continuous improvement, training programmes, project monitoring and technical evaluation should be carried out occasionally. Some of the cost reduction opportunities identified involve activities such as land preparation, evacuation of fresh fruit bunches (FFB), fertiliser application and weed control. It is concluded that mechanisation provides opportunities to reduce cost and labour requirement through proper planning, commitment and monitoring system.
