Soil respiration measurements.

A system for measuring respiration in soil, involving a metal chamber hermetically fitted to a hollow base surrounding the soil sample to be studied, is described and illustrated. Air samples are taken regularly to monitor the increase in CO2 concentration in the chamber over time. For palms, which are usually planted in triangles with the pruned fronds placed in the windrows, measurements are taken in a grid of 5 positions to allow for local variations. Technology transfer has been carried out andthe system has been tested in Benin and Indonesia.
