Guthrie D X P oil palm planting material.

Guthrie dura (D) X pisifera (P) oil palm seeds are produced by the hybridization of mother palms selected from the Ulu Remis deli dura (URD) population and pisifera palms from the Ulu Remis tenera (URT) and URT-derived populations. The origin and development of the URD and URT breeding populations are discussed. The improvements in the yield and bunch characteristics in these parental populations are presented. The performance of the Guthrie D X P and 7 other D X P progenies of various sources werestudied in 4 trials conducted at four different locations, one in Indonesia and 3 in Malaysia. These cooperative trials were initiated in the mid 1970s. The mean fresh fruit bunches (FFB) yield of 4 D X P progenies tested at all 4 locations ranged from 19.5 to 27.8 t/ha. The Guthrie D X P progenies were among the highest yielders and also responded favourably in high yielding environments. The Guthrie D X P progenies were derived from the first introduction of URT selected pisifera. The later introductions of selected progeny-tested pisifera palms have indicated oil yield improvements of 5 to 15% in progeny trials. The prospects for further improvement in the Guthrie oil palm planting material are discussed.
