Uses and applications of alkyl polyglycoside in personal care products.

A wide variety of surfactant types can be found in personal care products. For cleaning purposes, the most common are alkyl and alkyl ether sukfatesm dye to their wide availability and good economy. Alkyl polyglycosaides, however, represent a new geneation of surfactants that are mild, biodegradable, and offer excellent value and performance when compared to conventional surfactants. Mildness plays a vital role in products formulated for bodily use. Testing, to demostrate this characteristic, is therefore increasingly important. Other important factors in cleaning and washing products include foam, foram characteristics, and viscosity building in the final formulated product. Alkyl polyglycosides, in various test methods, perform very well relative to other sufactants. Its nonionic nature offers a wide degree of flexibility compared to anionic or cationic surfactants. This flexibility also means performance beyond basic cleansing. Alkyl polyglycosides can be made from natural renewable resources, such as corn sugar or glucose and long-chain fatty alcohols made from many sources, for example, coconut oil. Increasing environmental awareness is beginning to play a role in the development of personal care products. This emerging class of surfactants is of significant importante to the personal care industry.
