Statement by the Director-General
This Regional Conference is the second to be held in the Pacific Islands. The previous one was held in Apia, Samoa, in 1996. FAO is indeed very happy to organize its regional conference in a Pacific Island country after a gap of 22 years. During these years, the Republic of Fiji and other Pacific Island countries have achieved significant progress in economic, social and human development. The agriculture sector remains an important sector for employment, income and food security of the people. FAO is proud be a development partner of 15 Pacific Island countries in their endeavor to sustainably increase agricultural production and productivity and enhance value addition in the sector.
