Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing at Global Level - GCP/GLO/1042/EC
Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing undermines national and regional efforts to conserve and manage fish stocks, and inhibits progress towards achieving the goals of long-term sustainability. Following the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, several provisions and requirements to address IUU fishing were agreed within the international framework of instruments for fisheries management. More recently, international instruments and guidelines have been adopted that specifically address IUU fishing, including the FAO Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing, commonly referred to as the Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA). The aim of the project was to strengthen capacity for the implementation of the PSMA and complementary instruments and tools. In particular, the project sought to address aspects related to information exchange and stakeholder coordination in support of the implementation of the PSMA and in combating IUU fishing.
