The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA)

The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA), first published in 1947, is FAO’s original flagship publication. It is the oldest global report in the UN system. Its initial aim, in a context of post-war recovery when “most nations are occupied with keeping hunger from their doors”, was to respond to FAO Members Countries’ requests for a summary of the prevailing situation in food and agriculture in order to help identify issues of concern for national and international policy (see The State of Food a nd Agriculture 1947). Within this mandate, the emphasis of SOFA has shifted in recent years to the analysis of policy issues in line with the greater complexity of the global food and agriculture situation and the institutional environment within which FAO works.
