FAO Aquaculture Newsletter 50 - December 2012

The December 2012 release of FAN celebrates its 50<sup>th</sup> issue. FAN 50 contains 7 brief articles on nutrition (farmed fish as provider of omega-3 oils), state of the world’s aquatic genetic resources, mariculture in Malta, gender mainstreaming in fisheries and aquaculture, legislation for sustainable aquaculture, business aquaculture, and international cooperation (FAO and OIE). It also includes aquaculture updates from the Asia-Pacific (APFIC 4<sup>th</sup> meeting, aquaculture assessme nt tools, sustainable intensification, aquatic biosecurity, aquaculture data and statistics, risk analysis) and Central Asia [aquaculture strategy, cage culture, code of good management practices, aquatic animal health (AAH)], North Africa (subregional aquaculture workshop), the Middle East (aquaculture on rooftop gardens in Gaza), South America (AAH in Suriname) and the Western Balkan (improving compliance to international standards on AAH). While highlighting the genesis and progression of FAN , this golden issue also pays tribute to great aquaculture colleagues, Dr Ziad Shehadeh and Dr Andre Georges Coche for their significant contributions to the aquaculture sector. Five staff profile include that of Dr Indroyono Soesilo, newly appointed Director of FIR and four interns from USA, Netherlands, South Korea and Germany. Six new aquaculture publications on marine cage farming feeds, good practice policies on gender in the fish value chain, cage installation for fish breeding, prudent us e of veterinary medicines and Pacific Aquaculture regional cooperative programme.
