Sustainable improvement of animal production and health

A symposium on “Sustainable Improvement of Animal Production and Healthâ€Â that was organized by Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture in cooperation with the Animal Production and Health Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations addressed the animal husbandry and public health issues that threaten global food security and safety. The growing world population is vulnerable to limitations in the production of agricultural product and any change, be it climatic realities and/pr variations or civil strive upset the delicate balance of providing affordable food for all. It is alarming that the world’s poorest people, some one billion living mostly in Africa and Asia, depend on livestock for their day-to-day livelihood. To reduce poverty, fight hunger and ensure global food security, there is an urgent need to increase livestock production in sustainable ways. This publication provides invaluable information only not only on h ow nuclear and related techniques can be used to support sustainable livestock production systems, but also about the constraints and opportunities for using these techniques in developing countries; it attempts to identify specific research needs and gaps and new options for using these techniques for solving established and emerging problems. As such, it is hoped that the information presented and suggestions made will provide valuable guidance to scientists in both the public and private sect ors as well as to government and institutional policy and decision makers.
