An increasing awareness of the need for coordinating fisheries interests, activities and development in the South Pacific led to a request to the United Nations Development Programme by interested governments for assistance in the establishment of a South Pacific Fisheries Development Agency. In response to this request, a UNDP project (RAS/69/102) covering Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia was established and, after an initial period starting July 1969 during which the Project Manager-designa te assisted in drafting the Plan of Operation, became operative from July 1970 until October 1973.
