Legislating to guarantee the rights of rural women in Africa
Agrifood systems are a major employer of women globally and constitute a more important source of livelihood for women than for men in many countries. However, inadequate legal and customary laws and practices have historically hindered the ability of women to access and control land and natural resources. Half the countries reporting on Sustainable Development Goal Indicator 5.a.2 have weak legal protections for women’s land rights. This Legal Brief provides an overview of gender disparities in Africa, highlights key international and regional instruments applicable, provides examples of legislation enacted in different African countries and offers a checklist for parliamentary action to ensure the disparities are closed where they exist.
