Urban and peri-urban agriculture

Urban and peri-urban agriculture(UPA) means the production of food and other outputs and related processes, taking place on land and other spaces within cities and surrounding regions. UPA is increasingly being adopted by city dwellers and promoted by local institutions to face the challenges such as climate change, pandemic, conflicts, hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition, obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases, as well as recent crises such as COVID-19 pandemic and Ukraine conflict. This brochure shows the types of UPA and their benefits, as well as how FAO promotes UPA globally both north and south.
