Overview of land degradation neutrality (LDN) in Europe and Central Asia

North Macedonia is a landlocked country located in the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. Most of its topography is mountainous (89 percent) with limited plain areas, making cultivated land a highly valuable resource which largely contributes to the economy and rural livelihoods. Increasing the resilience of agriculture has been a core national priority. Pastures and forestry areas have a very important local socio-economic role as most rural communities depend on them for fuel and subsistence activities. Functioning mountain ecosystems provide essential ecosystem services for the country , which is abundant in geological and biological diversity, with a high number soil types and the presence of many relict and endemic species.
