Underfunded appeals
Humanitarian needs have continued to rise in 2018, driven by conflict, instability and climate shocks. Safeguarding agriculture-based livelihoods from the outset of a crisis is crucial to rapidly increase food availability and access among vulnerable populations. FAO’s component of the global humanitarian appeals represents just 4 percent of the overall requirement of USD 25.39 billion. Despite up to 80 percent of those affected by ongoing crises relying on crops, livestock, fisheries and forest production for their survival, funding for FAO’s appeals has been disappointingly low, particularly in some countries facing protracted and deteriorating crises. The purpose of this publication therefore is to flag to our resource partners some critically underfunded crises, highlighting priority actions that need to be taken before the end of the year, as well as the funds needed to undertake these, in order to prevent a further deterioration in food security.
