Lake Tanganyika Authority Workshop to Develop a Protocol on Aquaculture

The first workshop to develop a protocol on aquaculture was held in Bujumbura, Burundi, from the 18-20 February 2014. The objective of the workshop was for the Lake Tanganyika Authority and its member countries (Burundi, Tanzania, DR Congo, and Zambia) to agree upon a regional, legal and institutional framework for the development and management of aquaculture in a shared lake. An initial draft version of the protocol - with potential core elements to be included and agreed upon - was presented, discussed and reviewed during the workshop by high-level participant teams from all countries. The main outcome of the meeting was the production of an updated version of the protocol, which revised during the workshop and agreed upon by the participants (draft 2). The next steps include an in-country review of draft 2 of the protocol followed by a review and approval by the Lake Tanganyika Authority Management Committee before the protocol is presented for adoption to the Conference of Ministe rs of the Lake Tanganyika Authority.
