The Soils of the Central Highlands Agricultural Research Station.

This report is one of a series of reports prepared by the Land Resource Section of FAO's "Environmental Resource Assesment for Rural Land Use Planning Project" (ERARLUP). Part of the Land Resource Section's programme is to conduct detailed soil surveys of the different regional agricultural research stations of AREA', distributed all over Yemen. The objectives are to make a comprehensive soil resource inventory, test the representativeness of the soils identified at the research station vis-a- vis the soils found in the region, define the main soil and water constraints in relation to crop production, and recommend suitable management and agricultural practices in relation to soil and water. This report describes various aspects of the soils of the Central Highlands Agriculntre Research Station (CHARS). It covers the development of the soils, their properties in relation to the landscape, their chemical and physical properties and the impact these have on crop performance. In addition , some recommendations are given on how to improve the soils and/or crop growth.
