Combining attachment surveys, collaborative photography and forum theatre for eliciting and debating the plurality of relation to place

All the values and attachments that link people to their places of life are generally not considered in the analysis and definition of territorial development policies in the "South". One of the difficulties in understanding these dimensions is methodological. How can a diversity of actors be supported to share their sensitive experiences of the territory, to explain the values underlying their practices? How can the plurality of attachments to places and the associated values be turned into a resource to define a common vision of territory? These are the two main questions that the TerAttach project wanted to answer. The territory under consideration is located in the north of Senegal: a strategic area with strong food security issues and rapidly changes with the establishment of agro-industries, involving new social and spatial reconfigurations. In this context, the objective was to define a method that allows: (i) to characterize the plurality of values and attachments to places within this territory; (ii) to debate this plurality with all the actors involved and (iii) to collectively analyze and identify ways in which values and attachments can coexist to support a common vision of the territory. To do this, we experimented an approach that combines place attachment surveys (Lewika' scale) collaborative photography and forum theatre. We will present how this method allows to objectify the different forms of place attachment and to elicit the power relations that exist between values associated to places and the way these relations defines the management option of the territory.
