Use of essential oils to control anthracnose development of mango due to Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

Anthracnose, a fungal disease caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species is the main postharvest problem regarding the production of mangoes (Mangifera indica) in Reunion Island. Traditional postharvest treatments use chemical treatments that do not comply with customers and export countries expectations. Chemical treatments are generally used against C. gloeosporioides. Our goal was to develop alternative methods for postharvest treatments, using the fungitoxic properties of various essentials oils. First, these treatments were applied in vitro, to C. gloeosporioides conidia, appressoria and mycelia. The fungitoxic and fungistatic effects of 4different essential oils were measured on spores, appressoria germination, and on mycelial growth. The second step was to measure the effects of these treatments on inoculated green mangoes with a solution of C. gloeosporioides spores. For this experiment, an anthracnose ‐ prone mango variety was used (Tommy Atkins). The effects of these treatments on fruits resistance mechanism were studied, especially in regard with the polyphenolic compounds and resorcinol biosynthesis. Essential oils effects on fruit quality were also a key data. Fruit quality was evaluated by biochemical measurements (pH, sugars) in order to verify whether these treatments meet customer's expectations.
