AMR challenges faced by aquaculture sector in South East Asia and alternatives to inappropriate use of antibiotics
Asia accounts for about 90 percent of world aquaculture production of fish for human consumption (74 million tons). However, the intensive use of antibiotics in aquaculture has been associated with bacterial resistance not only in pathogens, but also in commensal and environmental bacteria, acting as a reservoir for AMR dissemination. Results of a regional project and research carried out in Vietnam will be presented showing the traditional knowledge related to plant use by small-scale farmers, and the potential of medicinal plants to act as antimicrobial and immune stimulant, enhancing fish resistance to infections.
