Ecolabeling: a good way to promote ES provision by agricultural systems?

Ecolabels was created to provide trustfull information to final consumer, specifying intrinsec and extrinsic characteristics of products - hence reducing information failure in markets. It has also been considered as a marketing strategy for enterprise. And more recently it is considered as a market based instrument for support conservation efforts. However, its contribution to promote ecosystem services has been is poorly evaluated and discussed. This communication analyse the possible contribution of ecolabeling to promote ES provision, especially from agricultural system. Analysing the certification processes, we argue that ecolabeling can be considered as a tool to promote ES services. Further, based on literature review and case studies from ecolabeling initiative especially of tropical products in Latin America, we show that ecolabeling of agriculture products do promote provision of ES. We also point out some keys limits of this mechanism and discuss possible adjustment of design and implementation process of Ecolabel, to secure and increase their effects regarding ES provision.
