World plantain and banana production systems
The world production of bananas and bananas (136 MT in 2011) continues to increase in general with the demand in relation to the increase of the population. The Cavendish group remains most produced by more than 66.5 MT (49 %) specially in the Asian continent, follows the cooking bananas (30 MT, 22 %) concentrated in Asia and in Africa, other dessert bananas (19.9 MT, 14.6 %) in Asia and Latin America, and the plantain (19.5 MT, 14.4 %) concentrated in Africa and in Latin America. Nevertheless, except the intensive productions for the exports (Cavendish: 95 %), the yields are in general low enough in relation with the potentials, between 5 et 12 tons per hectares. A part of these differences are in relation with t he genetic potential of the groups of varieties, the types of agricultural farms and the types of systems of production. 87 % of the agricultural farms t hat cultivate quite types of bananas concerns small producers of 'family' type, while 13 % concerns agricultural capitalist companies, with big differences according to the type of targeted market: local/national or export. About systems of production there exist several types that include from the intensive production with large input s, in monoculture with high density up to the 'agroforestry' with mixing of several species cultivated or not, with very low density of bananas/plantain.
