Mission to PT MusimMas oil palm plantations (Indonesia) May 2007

PT MusimMas appears to be a potential quality partner. As a member of RSPO, it is keen to apply its rules, notably in terms of environmental protection, which is an increasingly crucial subject. Plantation management methods: it is felt that the prevailing culture of results with adequate logistics and support is appropriate, and augurs well for future collaboration. The agronomic practices seen during the visit are good on the whole, and in any case demonstrate good oil palm growing experience. However, one major weak point was noted: the absence of prior studies when land was acquired, leading to zones with low potential being planted or even totally unplantable zones having to be abandoned. It is essential to correct that point for future land acquisitions. CIRAD collaboration is proposed in five areas: the environment, cultural practices, mineral nutrition, mapping and entomology (notably for studying the issue of the root pest on peat at Sorek). A timetable is proposed: a visit by two experts in the second half of 2007, to launch the most urgent operations and discuss a long-term collaboration programme.
