Vibrational properties, shrinkage and color of a selection of tropical woods with high extractives content

Heartwood extractives are well known for providing colour, and in some cases natural durability, to timbers. Several previous studies also report on effects of extractives from some tropical species on drying shrinkage on one hand, and on vibration damping on the Other hand. Yet little is known about their respective effects on these two types of wood properties depending on the particular chemicals contained in different species. In this ongoing work based on tropical woods with high extractive contents and low shrinkage coefficients, we want to clarify the effect of these secondary compounds on the observed low shrinkage, and to compare the trends in shrinkage, in vibration damping, and in colour values for these peculiar woods. First results on vibrational properties of some species rich in extractives are presented, and current developments are discussed.
