3D mechanical modelling of an orthotropic viscoelastic multilayer

The design of multilayer composites for applications in such as building or transportation industry, requires the prediction of the reaction of plates to various types of thermo-mechanical loading, including static load, vibration, thermal gradients, fire, etc. The present projects addresses one of these aspects, the mechanical response of viscoelastic multilayers to static loadings. Although in many cases the global properties of the composite material can be approached by thickness integration, and the response of the plate as a structure be computed through 2D modelling, in practice the characterisation methods, as well as some design applications or the study of delamination, involve complex end conditions requiring a fully 3D analysis. We decided to develop a numerical tool able to predict the viscoelastic response of a structure resulting from the juxtaposition of layers from various materials, including wood sheets but not necessarily limited to wood. The tool is developed using Castem 2000, a finite elements code produced by the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), which is getting increasingly popular among French research institutions due to a policy of open diffusion in the last years. The core of the tool is an incremental procedure named VORT (orthotropic viscoelasticity) allowing a step-by-step computation of the mechanical response of the structure with a local viscoelastic behaviour described by series of Kelvin models. It has been evolved from a preceding 2D version for the 2D modelling of thick beams. The main program reads data on plies description, produces the mesh, specifies boundary conditions and external loading, runs VORT, and ends with various post-treatments. Validation steps of the tool will be presented. Prospects of accounting for temperature influence and mechanosorptive effect will be discussed.
