Nam Theun 2 - Downstream restoration project - Livestock component : draft final report

The second phase of the dam on Nam Theun River for electricity production will use the Nam Phit and later on the Xe Bangfay Rivers for water diversion. This will sharply change rivers flow and over flooding conditions but also fish production. The project aims to attenuate the consequences of the changes for the environment (erosion) but also for around 180 villages in the area. The project purpose is thus to mitigate the effects on households' income and to compensate in terms of nutrition the decrease in fish production. The study reviews the livestock systems in a sample of 20 villages selected by the operator. According to the review and the surrounding factors analysis (markets, animal health...) the study makes some proposals on technical packages and model farms as well as a global approach, including training centre and extension activities to contribute to the project purpose. Lastly, global and specific budgets and operation time schedule for the livestock component are proposed.
