Dinamica del nitrogeno en el sistema agroforestal Coffea arabica con Eucalyptus deglupta en la zona sur de Costa Rica

Under full sun coffee (Coffea arabica) and coffee shaded with Eucalyptus deglupta, on an Ultisol in the southern zone of Costa Rica (600 mast and 2700 mm annual rainfall), soil N mineralisation and nitrification, N losses from the systems through run-off and leaching and soil NO3 accumulation were evaluated. Both systems received 180 kg N ha-1 as chemical fertilizer in 2002 (the study year). Soil N mineralization and nitrification in the 0-20 cm soil layer were not affected by E. deglupta. With gentle slopes (less than 11%), mineral N loss in surface runoff was very low (less than 1% of the fertilizer input). As a result of increased total evaporative demand and nitrate absorption by E. deglupta during the dry season, nitrate lixiviation was lower under coffee with E. deglupta. At 1.2 m soil depth, nitrate lixiviation was 103 and 62 kg N-NO3 ha-1 and at 2 m 25 and 15 kg N-NO3 ha-1 under full sun coffee and coffee with E. deglupta, respectively. NO3-N concentrations in soil solution at 2 m soil depth and in spring water were similar and low (about 1.5 mg L-1). The strong decrease in NNO3-N concentrations with depth in percolated water and the lowN leaching were mainly attributed to nitrate adsorption in soil layers below 80 cm depth.
