Study mission to set up BROCAP trap assessment trials in Indonesia 18/10/2005-01/11/2005
The mission was carried out under a contract between ICCRI and PT Indocafco, which had asked for mass CBB trapping trials to be set up using the BROCAP® trap to validate it under Indonesian conditions. The merit of mass trapping is to reduce CBB populations migrating from residual fruits, which results in fewer attacks on new crops without using insecticides. Two sites were examined: a) The Tapanuli site (Tarutung district, North Sumatra): arabica coffee trees (altitude at around 1200 m) without shade. There were substantial CBB attacks on harvested red berries (12.6%) and very severe attacks on berries fallen to the ground (55.9%). b) The Way Harong site (Tanggamus district, Lampung): robusta coffee trees with shade from large trees, with 11% of CBB attacks on fruits still on the trees. The sites visited had agro-ecological conditions that were different from and less favourable to the trap than those in El Salvador where the BROCAP® trap has been studied, particularly with regard to growing without shade in the Tapanuli region. In addition, berry production is virtually continual and there is no marked post-harvest period without fruits, which governs trapping efficiency. Despite the less favourable conditions at the sites studied in Sumatra, it is felt useful to have, now, in Indonesian conditions, an initial assessment of the BROCAP® trap whose efficiency could be significantly better at a later date once an improved attractant is available (ongoing work). The periods recommended for trials are the end of May for the Tapanuli site and the end of June for the Way Harong site. During the mission, a preliminary trial was installed, comprising one plot with 16 traps, and one neighbouring control plot in order to: train technicians how to set up trials in 2006, familiarize them with trap monitoring and CBB counting, and establish an attack observation method. This preliminary trial is to be conducted up to the end of December 2005.
