Genetic enhancement for improving productivity and human health in fragile environments. International Rice Research Institute (Project 7) : Final report September 2003

PROJECT: N°7, Genetic Enhancement for Improving Productivity and Human Health in Fragile Environments. The Project purpose is to "develop superior germplasm that will improve productivity and nutrition, and reduce farmers' risks in diverse fragile environments". "Fragile" is defined as rainfed, or non-irrigated. The Project has six outputs. Outputs 1-4 concern breeding for four specific rice environments: shallow to medium rainfed lowlands, flood-prone and infertile (salinity-affected soils) lowlands, drought-prone uplands, and "water-scarce tropical environment". Outputs 5 (breeding for micronutrient-enriched rice) cut across these five rice ecosystems. Output six (mechanism for promoting superior germplasm) focuses on farmer participation in the whole breeding programme. The Project is part of IRRI's Program 3, Improving livelihood and productivity for fragile environments. Other projects in this program include Project 8, (natural resources and crop management in fragile environments) and Project 9 (Consortium for Unfavorable Rainfed Environments) which provides uptake pathways for genetic research by linking IRRI with national research and extension systems (NARES).
