Is soybean oil itself and acceptable diesel fuel?

The quality of vegetable oils as fuel is difficult to assess because of interferences between properties of the triacylglycerols, the main components, and those of the many minor components because their content may varies significantly from sample to sample. A methodology was set up, consisting of working with pure triacylglycerols obtained by flash chromatography of refined oils, and then adding minor components. Soybean oil shows interesting properties, not far from the best oil of the series investigated as diesel fuel, coconut oil, and in the range of other biofuels Cirad is now accustomed to run diesel engines with.
