Identification of resistance to Potato yellow mosaic virus (Guadeloupe) and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (Reunion) among some lycopersicon species

The New World bipartite begomovirus Potato yellow mosaic virus (PYMV) has been reported in several countries of the Caribbean where it represents a serious tomato production constraint In recent years, the Old World monopartite begomovirus Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) has spread to the Caribbean but also to Réunion island where it became the first limiting factor for production both in the fields and in protected screenhouses Therefore, a study was carried out with the objective of identifying resistance to both Potato yellow mosaic virus, Guadeloupe (PYMV-[GP]) and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus, Réunion (TYLCV-[RE]) among some tomato breeding lines and accessions of wild Lycopersicon species through greenhouse screening under artificial inoculation, For this purpose, all the tomato genotypes were inoculated separately with PYMV-[GP] and with TYCV-[RE] by the whitefiy vector Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) as well as by mechanical method (graft-inoculation). The presence of PYMY-[GP] and TYLCV-[RE] was confirmed using ELISA. Accession Lycopersicon chilense LA 1969 was the best source of resistance to both viruses when vector-inoculated. Accessions L. pimpinellifolium INRA Hirsute and LA 1478, were found partially resistant to both PYMV-[GP] and TYLCV-[RE] when vector-inoculated, but were found susceptible to both viruses when graft-inoculated. Accession L. pimpinellifolium LA 2187 and L. esculentum line Atatürk were the most resistant to PYMV-[GP] whatever the method of inoculation, while being only partially resistant to TYLCV-[RE].
