Enhancing genetic diversity in rice production in Latin America through population improvement

Since male-sterile genes and a simplified crossing technique became available there have been no technical limitations to use population improvement in rice. The breeding methodology allows sustainable use of rice genetic resources through creating broad-based composite populations, which may combine several parents from different origins. These germplasm are introduced, evaluated and managed by national programs. After selecting the most suitable ones they either use it as base for their populational breeding programs or create new populations by introducing local adapted germplasm. The recurrent selection methodology relays on S0:2 family evaluations. Ahead for the national programs there are: capacity building; improving their capability to start studying genetic progress, carrying on trait correlation studies; evaluating alternative for assessing the yield potential of the lines; and taking advantage of the biotechnological tools. Two project proposals to strength the national programs capability to sustainably use the rice genetic resources are presented.
