A review of the biological control of Plutella xylostella (L.), diamondback moth, in South and Central America

The diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella is a cosmopolitan insect that occurs throughout South and Central America. It was first reported in Cuba in 1908 (Cook and Horne, 1908); subsequently in 1928 in Brazil (Bondar, 1928) and 1930 in Jamaica (Edwards, 1930). DBM larvae feed on cruciferous plants and today it is the most destructive pest of crucifers in the region. If it is not adequately controlled, extensive damage to the crop will occur. In Mexico, DBM caused U$ 3 billion in crop damage between 1989-1992 (Bujanos et al., 1993 cited by Martinez-Castillo et al., 2002).
